Introduction

Panchagavya is a traditional organic preparation used in agriculture. It is prepared using naturally available cow-based products along with other organic ingredients. Panchagavya is considered an eco-friendly organic input and is used to support plant growth and overall plant health.

It can be prepared using simple ingredients and can be used as part of organic farming practices.

What is Panchagavya?

Panchagavya is an organic preparation made from a combination of cow dung, cow urine, milk, curd, ghee, jaggery, banana, tender coconut water and water.

The preparation contains nine main components and is traditionally used as an organic input for crop cultivation.

Panchagavya Ingredients and Proportion

Note: Jaggery can be used as an alternative to sugarcane juice. Use either 3 kg jaggery or 3 litres of sugarcane juice.

How to Prepare Panchagavya

Step 1: Mix Cow Dung and Ghee

Take 5 kg of fresh cow dung and 1 kg of cow ghee.

Mix them thoroughly until they are well combined. Stir the mixture in the morning and evening and keep it for 3 days.

Step 2: Add the Remaining Ingredients

After 3 days, add:

  1. 3 litres of cow urine
  2. 2 litres of cow milk
  3. 2 litres of cow curd
  4. 3 litres of tender coconut water
  5. 3 kg of jaggery or 3 litres of sugarcane juice
  6. 12 well-ripened Poovan bananas

Mash the bananas properly before adding them to the mixture.

Mix all the ingredients thoroughly.

Step 3: Fermentation and Regular Mixing

Keep the mixture for the required preparation period and stir it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Regular mixing helps maintain uniformity throughout the preparation process.

Final Preparation of Panchagavya

After adding all the ingredients, transfer the mixture into a wide-mouthed earthen pot, concrete tank, or plastic container.

  1. Keep the container in a shaded place, away from direct sunlight.
  2. Cover the container with wire mesh or a plastic mosquito net to prevent houseflies from entering and laying eggs.
  3. Stir the mixture twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
  4. Continue regular mixing throughout the preparation period.
  5. The Panchagavya stock solution will be ready after 18 days.
  6. Before use, mix the prepared Panchagavya well and filter it if required for spraying applications.

Important Points to Remember

  1. Use the ingredients in the recommended proportions.
  2. Mix cow dung and ghee thoroughly before adding the other ingredients.
  3. Stir the preparation regularly in the morning and evening.
  4. Keep the container in a shaded location.
  5. Protect the preparation from houseflies by covering the container with wire mesh or mosquito netting.
  6. Do not use buffalo products in place of the cow products.
  7. Use either jaggery or sugarcane juice as the sweetening ingredient.
  8. Use well-ripened Poovan bananas as specified.
  9. Keep the preparation clean and protected from contamination.
  10. Mix the Panchagavya thoroughly before using it.
  11. For spraying applications, filter the preparation to remove solid particles.
