Organic Certification in Organic Agriculture
Introduction
"Organic" is one of the most trusted labels in agriculture today — but that trust doesn't happen automatically. Behind every certified organic product is a documented, inspected, and verified process that confirms the produce was grown, handled, and stored according to recognized organic standards. Organic certification is what separates a genuinely organic farm from one that simply skips synthetic inputs. For Indian farmers looking to tap into organized markets, exports, or premium pricing, understanding how this certification works is the first step.
What is Organic Certification?
Organic certification involves inspection, documentation, verification, and approval by an authorized certification system or body. Simply avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides does not automatically make a farm certified organic. Farmers must follow prescribed organic practices and maintain proper records throughout production.
Organic Certification Systems in India
India mainly follows two recognized certification systems:
- PGS-India (Participatory Guarantee System): A group-based system based on participation, mutual trust, peer verification, and social responsibility. It is suitable mainly for small farmers and local or direct markets.
- NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production): A third-party certification system suitable for organized markets, processors, larger businesses, and export-oriented organic production.
Main Steps in Certification
- Select the certification system based on the farm and target market.
- Prepare the farm for organic management by reviewing previous chemical use, soil fertility, inputs, water sources, seeds, pest management, and possible contamination.
- Prepare an Organic Crop Production Plan covering crops, crop rotation, organic manures, seeds, pest management, irrigation, biodiversity, buffer zones, harvesting, storage, and transportation.
- Submit the required application and documents to the appropriate authority or certification body.
- Undergo inspection or peer verification to check farming practices, inputs, records, storage, and contamination control.
- Correct any non-compliances identified during verification.
- Receive certification approval and continue maintaining records and following standards for renewal.
Important Documentation
Farmers should maintain records such as farm maps, land details, crop plans, seed records, input registers, purchase bills, compost and manure records, field activity records, pest-management records, harvest records, storage and stock records, sales records, and buffer-zone details.
Conversion Period
Land previously managed under conventional farming may require a conversion period before the produce can receive organic certification. The duration depends on the crop and production system. Generally at least 2 years for annual/biennial crops and 36 months for perennial crops.
Benefits of Organic Certification
Organic certification helps to:
- Build consumer confidence and product credibility
- Improve traceability and record management
- Access organized domestic and export markets
- Support farmer groups and institutional buyers
- Strengthen the organic brand and marketing value
- Encourage better management of soil, water, biodiversity, and farm resources
Organic certification is not only about avoiding synthetic chemicals. It is a complete system involving approved organic practices, proper farm management, Inspection, Documentation and traceability ,and compliance with organic standards .PSG-India is mainly participatory and locally focused ,while NPOP provides a third certification route for wider markets.
